Meg from Esclusso - Artist. Designer. Maker.

Meg, can you introduce yourself, please?

I’m Meg, an artist and interior designer. I’m constantly amazed by the beauty and complexity of nature, which is an endless source of inspiration for my work. I love experimenting with different materials to create something unique and unexpected. Wellbeing is important to me and I believe that the spaces we create deeply affect how we feel, which is why I always strive to bring a sense of calm and balance into my artwork. My travels also play a huge role in shaping my creative process. I often bring back exotic plants and orchids, which I cultivate and incorporate into my designs. These plants serve as both a physical and symbolic connection to the natural world, reminding me of the diverse beauty of the places I’ve visited and fueling my creativity.

You create extraordinary candles and scented objects. What role do materials play in your creative process? How do you decide on the textures, colours, and scents for each piece?

Materials are at the heart of my creative process. When designing candles and scented objects, I choose materials that evoke a sensory connection to nature. I focus on textures that mirror the organic world. Colour selection is equally intuitive, often inspired by the shifting hues in the environments I've experienced, from desert sands to deep forest greens. As for scents, I aim to evoke a sense of place. Each fragrance is carefully chosen to transport you to a specific natural setting, creating an immersive experience. Ultimately, my goal is to craft pieces that engage the senses and bring the beauty of the outdoors into indoor spaces.

Your philosophy speaks to dissolving the boundaries between art and life. How do you envision your pieces transforming ordinary spaces and daily routines?

I believe art should be a part of everyday life, not separate from it. My candles and scented botanicals are designed to transform ordinary spaces by adding beauty and immersive experiences. Through their scent, texture, and form, I aim to make daily routines more meaningful, turning simple moments into something extraordinary. I hope my work invites people to pause, engage their senses, and celebrate both the moment and themselves.

Scent is deeply tied to memory and emotion. How do you choose the fragrances for your candles and wax melts to create a unique emotional resonance for your audience?

I aim to choose naturally soothing fragrances that evoke feelings of calm, relaxation, and empowerment, creating a unique emotional resonance and helping reaching your ZEN. Each fragrance is carefully crafted to not only enhance the ambiance of a space but also to connect on a deeper, emotional level, making each experience with my products both memorable and meaningful.

In an era of mass production, how important is sustainability and craftsmanship to you? How do you ensure that each piece is created with both quality and environmental consciousness in mind?

Craftsmanship and sustainability are essential to my work, especially in an era of mass production. I believe in creating pieces that not only hold artistic and sensory value but also minimize environmental impact. I carefully source eco-friendly materials, such as natural waxes and sustainable botanicals, many of which I personally pick and press, to ensure each piece is both high quality and environmentally conscious. Craftsmanship is key—I take great care in handcrafting each item to make it feel personal, unique, and durable, allowing it to be enjoyed for a long time without contributing to waste. My goal is to create products that are beautiful, responsibly made, and crafted with intention.

Finally, what is your self-care ritual?

It's really depends on where I am. In my London apartment, my self-care ritual involves doing yoga, surrounded by calming fragrances that help me relax, unwind, and stay present. This practice creates a peaceful space where I can recharge both mentally and physically, no matter how busy life gets.
