How to winter-proof your skin?
Winter can be the most wonderful time of the year. It can also be your skin’s worst nightmare. The harsh cold weather with biting winds, temperature fluctuations from moving between freezing weather and central heating, not to mention drinking less water and the indulgence of party season, can all cause problems for the skin.
Skin is left looking duller, more aged, and feeling drier and rough in texture. All skin types can be affected with dehydration during the winter months, and those with sensitive or dry skin conditions tend to suffer even more.
Studies show that during the winter, skin barrier function is reduced, including increased symptoms of inflammation and transepidermal water loss (TEWL), which means a decrease in hydration levels in the skin. The skin lipid production decreases, which shows visually as fine lines and wrinkles look more pronounced. A strong and healthy skin barrier is well moisturised, making the skin look smoother, feel softer, and keeps out allergens and irritants. When the skin barrier function is compromised, this loss of protection is one of the reasons why those with skin conditions such as dermatitis and psoriasis are particularly affected by winter weather.
There are a few simple steps you can do to help protect your skin during this season. Be sure to update your skincare routine with emollient products that will lock in moisture and avoid those that strip the skin at a time when it is already depleted. Look for botanical ingredients high in fatty acids that replenish and repair, and plant oils with similar properties to skin sebum. One of the best ways to hydrate the skin is by using a serum containing hyaluronic acid, an unrivaled skin moisture magnet that delivers lasting hydration. As there is less humidity in the air during winter to draw into the skin, make sure you layer your hyaluronic acid serum with moisturising products such as oils.
As the temperature outside goes down, we turn the heating inside up. Central heating may warm us up, but it can cause damage to the skin as it dries the air. And as tempting as it is to bathe in scorching hot water, it is best to turn the temperature down as very hot water weakens the skin’s natural lipid barrier. Apply your products to the body while it is still damp to lock in moisture.
All parts of our skin need extra tender loving care during the winter. Our body is covered in layers of clothing that rob the skin of moisture, especially around the joints. You can soothe tight, itchy skin with rich, nourishing body butters and creams containing natural botanical ingredients that provide a protective layer and well as helping to heal and strengthen the skin.
